Documentary Production

Max Films makes documentaries with real people at their centre, from festival short films to presenter-led factual pieces commissioned by brands. We co-produced The Reality of Hope, officially selected for the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

The Reality of Hope

The Reality of Hope bridges the worlds of VRChat and reality by following a friendship formed in virtual reality that grows into an act of selfless generosity. Hiyu, a VR creator in Stockholm, is facing imminent kidney failure. His online friend from New York, Photographotter, hears the news and spontaneously volunteers to donate a kidney, saving Hiyu’s life. Set against the colourful backdrop of the VR furry community, the film is about kindness, resilience and sacrifice, and how blending the virtual and the real can create a love that crosses continents.

The film was officially selected for the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

Documentary work for brands

The same approach, honest access, real people and a clear story, works for organisations that want to show what they do rather than tell. For Altilium we filmed motoring broadcaster Quentin Willson touring their EV battery recycling centre in Tavistock, a presenter-led piece that explains complex technology through a genuine visit. For Britishvolt we produced an investor update built around the chief technology officer explaining a technical milestone.

What to expect

  • Story first: we find the people and the moments that carry the subject, then build the film around them.
  • Observational filming: lightweight, discreet kit lets us film events as they happen rather than staging them.
  • Interviews that feel like conversations: sit-down and on-location, with the questions that matter.
  • Festival and broadcast standards: the same care in sound, grading and delivery whether the film is for Sundance or your own channels.
